A Clinical Study of Seizure Disorder in Children under 15 Years of Age

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to reveal the clinical pictures of infancy and childhood onset seizure disorder. Three hundreds seventy-six patients, diagnosed at the neuropsychiatric department of Haewha Hospital, Korea University Medical Center from January, 1984 to January 1988 were clinically studied.
Ratio of male to female was 1.7:1. As to the age distribution, 42.55% of the patients were at the age between 10 and 15, 22.35% 5 and 9, 24.20% 2 and 4, and 10.90% 0 and 1.
In the seizure types, the percentage of generalized type was 71.01%, partial one 22.80%, and unclassified one 6.11%.
As to the age of onset, 30.85% of patients had their first attack at the age between 10 and 15, 26.04% 2 and 4, 22.34% 0 and 1, and 20.74% 5 and 9. As a consequence, about 5 - 0% of patients had their first attack before the age of 4.
In the precipitating factors, the most frequent one was fever(23.40%), and the second most frequent one was sleep(7.18%). And there was statistical difference in the precipitating factors among the different age groups(P<0.01).
In the causes of seizure, infection was rated 28.57%, head trauma 15.87%, difficult delivery 7.94%, and malformation 5.56%. There was statistical difference in the causes )f seizure among the different age groups (P<0.01).
On EEG, abnormal findings were recorded in 57.78% of patients, and also statistical differences among the different age group (P<0.01).
On CT brain scan that was taken in 90 patients, abnormal findings were noticed in 27.
78% of patients. The percentage of abnormal CT findings was 53.85% in parties type, 42. 21% in generalized one, and 3.85% in undifferentiated one.
Abnormal EEG findings was recorded in 72.31% of patients of normal CT ),rain scan
findings and 64.00% in abnormal one, and there was no statistical significance between EEG and CT findings.
